For the past few years I have been visualizing my travels – and for 2019, I got my husband to participate!
This was an insane year of travel for both of us. I had the opportunity to visit 4 continents and saw a wonder of the world between work and personal trips. I went on my first solo trip, backpacking Madrid and Lisbon before meeting up with my husband in Barcelona. I went to Japan with my brother, who had never left North America before. I also got sent to Brazil for work, taking me to South America for the very first time.
My job as a consultant has a lot of expected travel, but my husband’s job as a test engineer had him on the road nearly every week. He spent 70% of last year traveling, earning the Southwest Companion Pass for us to use in 2020. Ravi traveled to Barcelona four times last year for his job, on top of going to Canada twice with me for group and family trips.
Are you curious to see where exactly we went, and what our calendars are like? Check out the Tableau visualization below. Switch between myself (Michelle) and my husband (Ravi) to see the difference between our calendars and maps. Hover over and click on the calendar for more details about what we were up to. As always, the most challenging piece of building the dashboard is getting the data. Double the effort since we had to collect Ravi’s data, too!
Where will this take us in 2020? Neither of us have plans to slow down – my husband will likely have another European trip, and we have quite a few weddings coming up that we will be flying to. We are looking forward to 2020, and all of the places that we will get to see!
